Los angeles county's leading endodontists

In the field of endodontics, accurate diagnosis and treatment planning are crucial for successful outcomes. Traditionally, two-dimensional X-rays have been the primary imaging modality used in endodontics. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging has revolutionized the field of endodontics by providing detailed three-dimensional images of the maxillofacial region. It offers valuable information for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and evaluation of complex endodontic cases.  At Martin Endodontics, we’re proud to be able to utilize Cone Beam CT imaging in order to better serve our patients and provide excellence in endodontic care.

What to Expect

consult

The consultation will include 3D imaging, evaluation for risk factors (like tooth cracks), and discussion of possible prescriptions for before and after treatment based on medical history and dental anxiety level.

treatment

We will numb the area that is going to be treated and then get to work clearing any infection and properly resealing your tooth while you relax with a blanket, headphones, and sometimes sedation methods.

after care

After the numbness wears off, some soreness is normal. Following your customized post-op medication instructions is important to help prevent pain and swelling. Take your medication for as long as instructed.

follow up

A final 6-month follow-up appointment with imaging is required. We thoroughly evaluate how the roots and surrounding jaw bone are responding to the endodontic treatment.

Understanding Cone Beam CT Imaging

Cone Beam CT (CBCT) imaging is a specialized radiographic technique that generates three-dimensional images of the maxillofacial region. It utilizes a cone-shaped X-ray beam and a two-dimensional detector that rotates around the patient's head to capture a series of images. These images are then reconstructed by computer software to create detailed three-dimensional images.

Unlike conventional two-dimensional X-rays, CBCT imaging provides a comprehensive view of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures in high resolution. It allows our endodontists to visualize the intricate details of the root canal system, bone morphology, and any pathological changes with exceptional accuracy.

Applications of CBCT Imaging in Endodontics

This exceptional imaging technology provides a variety of benefits for our team and our patients, including:

Accurate Diagnosis: CBCT imaging enables us to diagnose complex endodontic cases more accurately. It provides detailed information about the anatomy, size, and configuration of root canals, as well as the presence of any additional canals, calcifications, or resorption. This increases the chances of successful outcomes.

Easier Treatment Planning: CBCT imaging plays a vital role in treatment planning for complex endodontic procedures. It allows our endodontists to visualize the spatial relationships between the teeth, surrounding structures, and any pathology present. This information helps in determining the best approach for the treatment, such as identifying the exact location for surgical access, evaluating the extent of root fractures, or assessing the suitability for endodontic retreatment.

Evaluation of Periapical Lesions: CBCT imaging is highly effective in assessing periapical lesions, such as cysts, granulomas, or abscesses. It provides a three-dimensional view of the lesion's size, location, and proximity to vital structures. This information aids in precise diagnosis and helps in planning the appropriate treatment, whether it involves nonsurgical endodontic therapy, surgical intervention, or a combination of both.

Trauma Assessment: In cases of dental trauma, CBCT imaging can be crucial in evaluating the extent of damage to the tooth, root fractures, or alveolar bone fractures. It provides detailed information about the precise location and severity of the trauma, facilitating proper treatment planning and decision-making when time is of the essence.

Dental Implant Planning: CBCT Imaging is also used for implant planning. Typically a full mouth scan is taken to evaluate the bone and surrounding structures. This is different than the CBCT we take, which only exposes several teeth in the area and allows us to see the intricacies of the canals and changes in bone.

What To Expect With a CBCT Scan

During a Cone Beam CT scan at Martin Endodontics, you will be asked to stand in the appropriate place to properly capture images. The CBCT machine, with a rotating arm, will capture multiple images as it rotates around your head. The process is relatively quick and will last about 20 seconds. After the scan, the images will be processed using specialized software to create detailed three-dimensional images, which will be analyzed by our endodontists to make a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.
