endodontic retreatment in beverly hills

effective endodontic retreatments for los angeles county patients

A root canal is a treatment designed to clean and save an infected tooth. However, some patients might experience a new infection months or years after their treatment. During a root canal we are trying to reduce the bacteria inside the tooth to 0% by scrubbing out the main canals and trying to get our disinfecting rinses into the many small offshoots of the main canals. However the root canal system is a web of canals where bacteria can occasionally hide and survive. When this happens, you may require endodontic retreatment.

At Martin Endodontics, both Dr. Alexa Martin and Dr. Clark Martin provide patients with the highest quality of dental treatment. Both doctors are diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics, with the highest level of expertise. They will help ensure that your smile stays bright and healthy. If you are suffering from a failing root canal treatment, we provide several service options that can keep your teeth healthy and strong. Call us today to learn more about what we can do for you.

What to Expect

consult

The consultation will include 3D imaging, evaluation for risk factors (like tooth cracks), and discussion of possible prescriptions for before and after treatment based on medical history and dental anxiety level.

treatment

We will numb the area that is going to be treated and then get to work clearing any infection and properly resealing your tooth while you relax with a blanket, headphones, and sometimes sedation methods.

after care

After the numbness wears off, some soreness is normal. Following your customized post-op medication instructions is important to help prevent pain and swelling. Take your medication for as long as instructed.

follow up

A final 6-month follow-up appointment with imaging is required. We thoroughly evaluate how the roots and surrounding jaw bone are responding to the endodontic treatment.

Do I Need Endodontic Retreatment?

If even a small number of strong bacteria survive in the root of your tooth, there is the possibility you will develop another infection. When this happens, you run all the same risks as when you first needed a root canal. However, it is not always the fault of your previous endodontist, as there are several reasons you might need endodontic retreatment.

If you develop tooth decay on a treated tooth or the filling on the tooth is leaking and letting saliva and bacteria inside, that new decay could expose the filling of your previous root canal. When this happens, an infection can develop.

A small amount of tissue within your tooth may not have been fully treated during your previous root canal. This is usually the case if you have a hard-to-reach branched canal and the disinfectants were not able to reach this area well enough.

The final filling or crown was not placed quickly enough after your last root canal and the root canal filling became contaminated.

Your tooth has cracked, and this crack is allowing bacteria into the inner tooth again.

If you are experiencing increased sensitivity to temperature or pain in your tooth, come in right away for an evaluation. An infected tooth should be treated as soon as possible to avoid any negative effects. Save your tooth today by coming in for endodontic retreatment.

How Does Endodontic Retreatment Work?

Unlike your first root canal, endodontic retreatment is slightly different. First, we need to reopen your tooth. This typically entails removing the filling or making a small access point in the crown so we can reach the inner filling. We then remove the inner filling and thoroughly clean the affected area, eliminating any remaining bacteria hiding within the canals with a series of disinfecting mechanisms.

Once your inner tooth has been fully cleaned, will we fill and seal your root canal back up. You will then need to return to your dentist for a restoration in the upper part of your tooth as soon as possible to prevent future infection. When root canal therapy is done properly, your tooth should soon be on the road to healing.

Is Endodontic reTreatment Painful?

Many patients are concerned about endodontic treatment in general. However, an endodontic retreatment should be about the same as your first root canal treatment. When done by a trained expert using the latest techniques, root canal treatment is as pain free as possible. Infections can be painful, but with our modern treatment techniques, we will get you on the road to recovery with less downtime. We make every effort to ensure you have a comfortable and stress-free experience at Martin Endodontics. With our use of local anesthetics and careful technique, your treatment should be virtually pain-free.  If you have any reservations about receiving treatment, speak with our staff and doctor. The more you know about your treatment, the less intimidating it will be.

Is There a Recovery Period?

You should be able to return to normal activity as soon as your treatment is complete, which typically takes around an hour. However, it can take some time for the anesthetic to wear off. During this time, you can go about your normal routine, but we recommend avoiding eating or chewing anything. You might accidentally bite your cheek!
